Chapter 5: Last Friday

The Maple Diner had its whole back room full of seniors.

I came in through the side door with Robby on one side and Pia on the other.

Pia had left the bakery in her apron.

"If anybody says one word," she muttered, "I'm going to be a criminal."

"Don't."

"I'm just saying I have flour on my hands and I'm not afraid to use it."

The room went quiet when they saw me.

There were about fifty people at the long tables, with burgers and a pitcher of root beer and Delaney's shoebox in the middle.

Delaney sat at the head with Dane next to her.

He had his arm along the back of her chair.

I had not noticed before how often his arm went there.

"Selah!" Delaney said, and she stood up. "You came. Dane said you wanted to say something."

"Dane said a lot of things."

I put my phone on the table, face up, with the voice recorder running.

I had started it in the truck.

"Dane called the testing center on Thursday afternoon," I said. "He had my application number. He asked how to get a ticket voided."

There was a small noise around the table, the sound of fifty people turning to look at the same boy.

Dane did not even blink.

"I asked a question, Selah. For the game."

"For the game."

"Delaney wanted to be sure the final dare was safe. So I called and asked what would happen if a ticket went missing. They said it would be fine." He turned to the room. "That's all. I was being careful."

"I asked him to," Delaney said quickly. "I didn't want anyone to get hurt."

"They told me a voided ticket is dead forever."

"That's not what the lady told me." Dane looked sorry for me. "Selah, I think you're confused. You've barely slept."
