Chapter 6: Bus Three

At six on Saturday morning, bus three was parked at the end of the lot with its doors open.

The sky was gray and the grass was wet, and nearly every senior in my class was standing around in sweatshirts holding coffee.

Delaney had brought donuts.

I had slept two hours.

Our homeroom teacher was supposed to ride this bus, and he was not there.

The man at the front instead was a student teacher in his twenties, holding a clipboard and looking happy.

"Dane gave me the note," he said. "It's a senior tradition. Very cool."

"It's not a tradition," I said. "It was invented this week."

"Oh." He considered that. "Still cool."

I had texted the principal at 5:15 and again at 5:40.

An automatic reply said she was out of town until Monday.

I had called our homeroom teacher four times, and each time I got the same recorded voice.

His train had been delayed, he had told someone in the office, and he would be there as soon as he could.

"Okay, everyone," I said, and I stood on the bus steps. "Listen."

Nobody did.

"Everyone, please. It's 6:08. The bus leaves at 7:15. We have an hour to find forty-three envelopes."

"That's what makes it fun," Delaney said brightly, and a few people laughed.

I raised my voice.

"If we all pile on and tear it apart, we'll miss something. Let's do it in rows. Row one on the left, rows one through five. Everyone checks the seat number printed on the back of the seat in front of them. Run your hand under the seat and along the floor. If you find an envelope, you call out the seat number, not the name."
