Chapter 9: Did You Check
The exam has two halves, and there is a thirty-minute break between them.
I had finished the first half in a daze, and I do not remember a single question.
I remember the clock above the proctor's head and the sound of two hundred pencils.
I remember thinking, You are in the room, Selah, so don't waste it.
When the break was called, I went to the girls' room at the end of the hall.
Our phones were locked in lockers in the lobby, so I had nothing in my hands.
I stood at the sink and ran cold water over my wrists.
A stall door opened behind me.
Delaney came out and walked to the sink next to mine.
She turned on the tap and washed her hands without looking up.
There was nobody else in the room.
"Did you finish the first half?" she asked.
"Yes."
"I got through it." She rubbed soap between her fingers. "I thought I'd be too angry to read."
I stared at her in the mirror.
Her eyes were not red now.
Her face looked completely different when she was not performing, flat and tired and older.
"Delaney, what is this?"
"You wanted to know what the game was for." She turned off the water. "Don't worry, I'll say it once, and I'll say it fast."
"I never asked what it was for."
"Last March, I was the lab aide in chemistry. Seventh period." Her voice did not change. "Somebody took the answer key for the unit test out of the teacher's desk drawer. A week later you walked into the principal's office and told her it was me."
