Chapter 19: The Whole Block

Dom came out of the back room with the coffee pot still in his hand.

Mr. Halsted saw him and stopped talking.

His tan went a shade paler.

Then he looked away fast, at the machines, at the boarded window, anywhere but the man with the coffee pot.

"One hour," he said again, to me. "The locks get changed at nine."

"The notice says thirty days," I said. "That's the fifteenth. It's the fifth."

"The notice is a courtesy. This is the order."

He waved the paper.

The marshal behind him, a heavy woman with reading glasses pushed up in her hair, didn't look happy about any of it.

Dom set the coffee pot down on the cutting table.

He took one step forward.

I put my hand flat on his chest without looking at him.

"No," I said.

"Jemma."

"No money. No phone calls. No looking at him like that." I kept my hand where it was. "You promised me public. This is public."

He looked down at my hand.

Then he stepped back to the radio and folded his arms.

Mr. Halsted let his breath out.

Upstairs, a door banged.

Gran came down the steep stairs one at a time, in her housecoat, with her blue cast in a sling.
