Chapter 7: Then Go

Every Friday at noon, the whole office of Dorsey Supply ate lunch in the long conference room.

Everyone came, from the drivers up to the vice presidents.

My father liked to see all his people at one table.

I came in at five past twelve with my coat on and my keys in my hand.

Kendrick stood at the buffet with a plate of sandwiches, laughing with a man from accounting.

Ansel sat at the end, and Chelsea sat to his right in a pale blue sweater.

She waved at me, and she looked glad to see me.

"Calla! There's a chair here."

"No, thank you," I said.

I walked down the length of the table and stopped beside my husband.

"Kendrick, I need to tell you something."

"Hey, babe." He kissed my cheek. "Grab a plate."

"I'm moving out."

His smile stayed on his face a moment too long.

"What?"

"I'm moving into the studio over the bakery. The owner said I can have it as long as I like."

He lowered his plate.

The man from accounting looked at the ceiling and then very quickly at the coffee machine.

"Calla," Kendrick said quietly. "Not here."

"You wanted me to say sorry in front of my whole family. I'd like to say this here."

The room had gone silent.

Forty people were holding sandwiches and not moving.
