Chapter 9: No Hands
Kendrick did not move Chelsea out on Sunday.
He texted me at nine that night: She's got a cold. Give me till Wednesday.
On Wednesday he wrote: Her new place isn't ready. Friday?
I did not answer either one.
I worked my shift on Thursday with my sleeves rolled up and my mind on a lab downtown.
At eight in the morning the bell over the bakery door rang, and Dr. Hagan walked in.
He wore his long grey coat and he held a folded newspaper.
The owner looked up from the register and then looked at me.
"Two coffees," he said.
"We have a line," the owner said.
"Nobody is in it."
"They will be."
"Then I'll be quick." He turned to me. "Calla, can you take a break?"
"She's got six trays of croissants," the owner said.
"I'll do the croissants," said the girl from the counter, with great dignity, and she took off her apron.
"I haven't been told your name," the owner said to him.
"Cormac Hagan."
"Doctor?"
"Yes."
"Her doctor?"
"Yes," he said.
The owner looked at me for a very long time.
"Take twenty minutes," she said. "And eat something he buys you."
We sat at the small table by the window.
He pushed a coffee toward me and an envelope beside it.
"It came in early," he said. "I wanted you to have it before you went home."
"Is it good news or bad?"
"I don't know yet which you'd call it." He didn't open it. "Do you want to read it here, or somewhere quieter? My apartment is above the old pharmacy next to the clinic, and it's on the way to your bus."
