Chapter 11: Two Eleven
Chadwick drove me home in silence, with both hands on the wheel and the phone on speaker.
"Revoke it," he said to the general counsel. "Every login on that account, tonight. And get me the president of the bank at his house."
"Mr. Higginson, it's ten at night."
"Then wake him."
When the call ended, I looked at the side of his face in the passing streetlights.
"You're going to fire her," I said.
"First thing in the morning."
"Don't."
His eyes flicked to me.
"She cut my voice into a hostage note, Eileen."
"I know. And the minute you fire her, she's a girl who was thrown out by a husband after his wife whispered in his ear. She'll cry on the right shoulder. Someone will believe her."
"Who?"
"Does it matter?"
He drove in silence for two blocks.
"What do you want, then?"
"A week," I said. "I want her to do something where everyone can see."
He pulled over to the curb in front of the penthouse and put the car in park.
"And the loan?"
"Three business days, the general counsel said."
"I'll cover it."
"With what?"
He took out his phone and dialed.
The bank's president answered on the fourth ring, thick with sleep.
"It's Chadwick Higginson," he said. "Your bank carries the McDonough loan for Higginson Holdings, and the notice came out of my own office. Until it is withdrawn, I'm pledging my own shares to cover the whole amount. All forty percent of them. Yes. In writing, tonight. Send someone to my house."
He hung up.
I stared at him.
"You can't just..."
"I did," he said. "If the committee says no, the bank takes my stock before it takes your father's house."
"Chadwick, that's your whole..."
"I know what it is."
He looked straight ahead through the windshield.
"Don't say anything," he said. "Your napkin says no morning talk. It doesn't say anything about the night before."
