Chapter 7: The Wheelhouse
Tiago's POV
I held her against the rock with my body until the light went away.
The beam passed over the cleft twice.
It found nothing but black water and a boat in the shadow of a cliff, and it moved on along the shore.
Two men's voices argued about dinner on the lawn above us.
Then a car door shut.
I didn't move for another minute.
She was breathing hard against my chest, and her hair was in my mouth.
I could smell the oil on her hands and the salt dried on her skin.
My knuckles throbbed.
I didn't care.
Back at the door, the cedar and lavender had come breathing out of the dark.
For a second, something had caught in my mind and let go.
It had been the smallest thing, there and gone.
Then she had cried, and I had stopped thinking about anything but her.
"They've gone," Octavia whispered.
"Not yet," I said.
"Tiago," she said.
"Yes, Captain."
"Take me to the boat."
I picked her up, because her legs were still unsteady and the ledge was slick.
I carried her over the rock to the Lucia.
She let me.
She wrapped her arms around my neck and held on, and I felt it all the way down.
I set her on the deck.
She was already looking at the wheelhouse.
"In there," she said.
"It's a closet," I said.
"It has a door and a glass wall and nobody for a mile. In."
I went in.
The wheelhouse was five feet wide.
The wheel stood in the middle, with the brass compass and a shelf of charts.
