Chapter 9: Boards
The old man left at eight and gave Axel the keys.
"Lock the side door and leave the lights," he said. "Bungee cord goes back on the handle. I'm not paying for a new door."
Then he put on his hat and walked out into the snow, and the building was ours.
I stood at the east boards in the one working bank of lights, with my skates still on.
I had been standing there a long time.
Axel came back from the side door, and the keys jingled in his hand, and I heard him slow down behind me.
"I changed my mind," I said.
He didn't answer.
"He's been dead three years," I said, still facing the ice. "Everything in this building is sad. I'm so tired of it being sad."
"Kaisa."
"I want to do something in here that's mine."
I turned around.
He stood ten feet away in his black coat, with snow melting in his beard and the keys hanging from his fist.
His face was utterly open.
"Take your coat off," I said. "Put it on the floor."
He did.
He spread the big wool coat on the rubber mat in front of the boards.
He did it for a woman crossing a puddle.
I walked up to him and put a hand on his chest and backed him against the boards.
The wood was old and scarred and cold through his sweater.
The dull green paint had my father's initials on it somewhere, carved into the corner by a boy who was now a famous man.
I looked up into his face.
"Hands at your sides," I said.
"Okay."
"You don't touch me until I tell you."
"Okay."
I lowered myself onto his coat.
I knelt on it in my leggings, and the wool was still warm from his body.
I looked up at him from there.
