Chapter 10: The Wedding Night Came Early

He set me down on the edge of my own bed, in the dark.

The moon made a pale square on the wall.

He didn't turn on a lamp.

"Tell me to stop," he said, "and I will."

"Don't you dare."

His mouth twitched, and then he knelt in front of me, bad leg out to one side.

He took off my shoes.

One, then the other.

He ran his palms up the backs of my calves, slowly, and I felt every inch of it.

"You're shaking," he said.

"So are you."

"Yes."

I pulled him up by the collar and kissed him again.

His hands went to the buttons of my blouse.

This time he didn't stop.

He opened them one at a time, with a patience that made me want to scream.

His knuckles brushed my skin at every button.

When the blouse fell open, he went still.

His breath left him in a long, unsteady sigh.

"God," he said.

"Nico."

"Give me a second." His eyes ran over me. "I've imagined this for years. I was wrong about all of it."

I reached up and pushed his jacket off his shoulders.

He let it drop.

I undid his tie, and his shirt, and put my palms flat against his chest.

His heart beat fast and hard under my hand.

He pulled off his trousers.

The scar I'd felt through the cloth was there, a puckered white ridge down the outside of his right thigh.

I traced it with two fingers.

He caught his breath.

"Does it bother you?" he asked.

"It's you."

He looked at me, and his face softened.

Then he laid me back on the bed and covered me with his body.

His mouth found my throat, my collarbone, the swell of my breast.

I arched into him.

He took my nipple in his mouth, hot and wet, and I cried out and dug my fingers into his hair.
