Chapter 20: Two Hundred Meters

Nico drove the Don's car with his bad leg flat on the pedal and the cut on his eyebrow still bleeding.

Two cars of the Don's men came behind us with their lights off.

"You shouldn't be driving," I said.

"I'm not letting anyone else take you to him."

"I'm not going to him."

"Giulia."

"I'm coming as far as the cathedral," I said. "That's all I'll promise."

He glanced at me, and it was the look from the chapel, the one where he waited for me to prove I meant it.

I met it.

He turned his eyes back to the road.

"The boat's dead," he said, after a block.

"Two of my men went aboard Wednesday night and pulled the fuel pump fuse."

He kept his eyes on the road.

"They left Benedetta's key in the cabin, where he'd look for it."

"So he can't sail."

"He can't sail. He knows it by now, which is why he's using the phone."

"What's under the pier?"

"I don't know."

We came down the long road to the harbor with the shut warehouses on one side, and the water was black and flat on the other.

The cathedral rose at the end of it, a pale shape against the sky, its steps washed in the white light of two street lamps.

The steps from my dream.

I had seen them in sunshine, with flowers, and a man coming down them with a cane.

I put my hand flat against my stomach.

"Stop here," I said.

Nico braked.

We were still at the top of the road, with the cathedral square in front of us.

The quay lay a long way below, where the road ran down to the water between two rows of lamps.
