Chapter 13: Geoffrey's Cage
"You paid him," I said.
"Yes."
The alley was cold and wet, and my sweater was no use against it.
Geoffrey took off his jacket and held it out.
I did not take it.
He put it on the step beside him, as if that were what he had meant to do all along.
"Tell me how," I said. "Tell me all of it, from the start."
"Three weeks ago I heard my father on the phone in his study."
"He said, 'The Marceau girl, before the premiere.'"
"He said it the way he orders a car."
My stomach turned over, but I kept my face still.
"He chose me for the engagement because of my name," I said.
"He chose you because he wanted you where he could watch you."
"Your father worked in his building for fifteen years and then died saying something to him."
"My father wanted to know what you had been left."
"And when he was sure you had nothing, he planned to be rid of you."
