Chapter 16: Lena's Debt
Lena was sitting on my dressing table at six in the morning, with her knees pulled up and her hands around a plain brown envelope.
She had no makeup on.
She looked younger than twenty-seven, and much more tired.
I closed the door and stayed against it.
"You have five minutes," I said.
"I know."
"You cut my ribbon and sold my schedule, and then you cried in front of forty people."
"I know that too."
"So tell me what you want, and make it short."
She slid off the table and held out the envelope.
I didn't take it.
"Open it yourself," she said. "I won't tell you what's in it. I want you to see it with your own eyes."
I opened it.
Inside were bank statements from a care home in Westchester, eight months of them, for Lena's mother.
Every month the bill was paid in full, from an account I recognized by its number.
It was the shell company with no office.
