Chapter 12: The Recorder

Diane was at the florist's.

Elliot had called the house to check, and the housekeeper said so, and we drove over at noon.

He let us in the front door with a key he'd carried to Alaska and back.

The old study was on the second floor.

Someone had stacked six cardboard boxes against the wall and labeled them with a marker: S. MACHINES.

"There," I said.

My old laptop sat on top of the second box, with its cracked corner and the sticker of a pill bottle I'd stuck on it in college.

I flipped it open.

The battery was dead.

"I wonder why she wants it back to me so fast," I said.

"She doesn't want you to have it," Elliot said. "She wants you gone, and she wants the study clear before the wedding. That's all."

"Then why call?"

"Because I'd have found it anyway."

I dug through the box under it.

There were cables and a keyboard, and a small silver recorder in the bottom.

I knew it at once.

It was the dictation recorder Spencer had used when he couldn't see.

For three years he had talked into it every day, drafts of emails, notes for the yard, a letter to the bank, and every night I typed them up on my laptop at his desk.

"I thought this was lost," I said.

"What's on it?"

"Everything I already typed."

I turned it over.

There was a tiny screen and a row of buttons, and a folder list.

I scrolled.

Day 1. Day 2. Day 3.

Each one was a file I knew, and I could name what each one said without playing it.
