Chapter 21: Say It Again

"Turn it off," Spencer said.

The sound man didn't move.

On the speakers, Spencer's younger voice went on, cool and unhurried.

"Let Margot think I don't know. She'll never leave, because she's built to stay."

The voice went on, as easy as a man ordering lunch.

"So I'll marry Lacey. And Margot will still be there in the guest room, changing my sleeves, because she can't help herself."

A woman in the second row said, "Oh my God."

"It's a good plan," said the voice. "It's the best one I've got."

The recording clicked.

Then a flat little machine voice read out the date, three years back, in November.

Nobody breathed.

Spencer jumped down off the step and ran for the table.

Elliot caught him by the arm before he got there.

"Let go of me," Spencer said.

"Not yet."

"It's fake! She cut it together! She's been obsessed with me for years, everyone knows she has..."

"Spencer," Lacey said.

She hadn't raised her voice.

She stood at the arch in her eleven thousand dollars of white, and her veil had slipped to one shoulder.

She looked at him from far away.

"You knew," she said. "All three years."

"Babe, listen to me."

"I asked you yesterday. I asked you on your own grass."

"I was trying to protect you."

"From what?"

He opened his mouth and found nothing in it.

Lacey took off her ring.

It was the same ring she had shown me at dawn on the first day.

The square-cut stone was big enough to see from the back row.

She walked down the aisle to me with it in her fist.
