Chapter 15: Still His Wife
At the bottom of the fax, under her signature, was a telephone number.
A London number, written in the same loopy hand.
"Don't," Gus said.
"Why not?"
"Because it might be hers."
"Then she can tell me how she left."
I dialed it on Avis's shop phone, with the long curly cord, standing behind the counter where the ring had first come home.
It rang four times. A man answered.
He sounded tired and English and about forty.
"Hello?"
"I'm Willa Pinkham. I found this number under Vanessa's signature."
The line went so quiet I thought he'd hung up.
"So the ring arrived," he said. "Good. I sent it."
Gus put his hand flat on the counter next to mine.
"It's your wife's ring," I said.
"It is."
"She says she's divorced."
He laughed. It wasn't a nice sound. It was a man laughing so he wouldn't do something worse.
"Does she. Well. Nobody's told my solicitor."
"You're still married."
"We're still married. She left on a Tuesday. I came home from a site meeting and the ring was on the kitchen table, on top of the bills."
