Chapter 21: What Davis Signed
"No," Davis said.
He said it from the projection table, without a microphone, and the whole room heard it anyway.
Celia turned.
"Sit down, Davis."
"No." He walked back toward the stage with the lab-grown ring still in his fist. "Merriam House doesn't own that note, Mother."
"Davis."
"It's held by a company with three initials in Delaware."
His voice shook, and then it didn't. "You put it in my name. You said yours couldn't be on it, because of the Champlain investors."
The sunburned investor was still standing at his table. He sat back down slowly, to watch.
"You had me sign the papers in your office in May," Davis said. "I didn't read them. I never read anything you hand me."
"This is not the place."
"You made it the place. You said it into a microphone."
He climbed the steps to the stage.
He looked down at the front table.
"Is the firm's lawyer here?"
A gray-haired man at table one put down his fork as if it had bitten him.
"I'm here, Davis."
"Then come up. I'm the managing member of that company. I want to assign the note on the Tibbetts building to Avis Tibbetts. For one dollar. Tonight."
