Chapter 22: Film This

Darren got to the case before anyone could reach him.

He took the lid in both fists and threw his weight on it, and I snatched my hand back, and the oak came down on empty felt.

It landed on the yellow flashlight.

The plastic cracked, and the light inside it went out.

The whole hall heard that.

Greer moved faster than I had ever seen her move.

She caught Darren by the wrist and twisted, and he cried out, and the lid slid off the felt and hit the floor with a bang.

"Not tonight," she said.

"Let go of me!"

"No."

June came through the crowd with her paper cup still in her hand.

She set the cup down on the wine table very carefully, and then she took Darren's other arm and pinned it behind him.

"Deputy," she said, over her shoulder.

The deputy was already coming down the aisle.

He had a hand on his belt, and he stopped a yard from Darren and looked at Greer.

"Ma'am. Is this the man on the recording?"

"It is."

"And the policy you mentioned?"

"On his desk at home, third drawer, under the lease." Greer didn't let go of the wrist. "And the eight cards he wrote me are in the biscuit tin by the coat rack."

Ninety people stood in a circle around us.

Not one of them was holding a glass anymore.

Darren twisted in June's grip.

His face was wet, and his silver hair had come loose over his forehead.

"She sent him!" he shouted. "Ask her! You've all heard her! She's a murderer, she's not fit, ask her whose idea the water was!"

The room went still.

I took a step toward him, and Greer shook her head at me, very slightly.
