Chapter 4: Customers

It was Saturday, and by eleven the greenhouse had filled with customers.

Greer set me to work with my good hand, sweeping gravel off the aisle, and she didn't look at me once while she rang up a woman's tomato seedlings.

Everyone else did.

Half of Tallow Creek had been at the gallery the night before, or had watched the video since.

Nobody said a word to me.

They said plenty to each other, quietly, over the herb tables.

Darren came in with a white paper bag and a tray of coffees.

He wore his weekend jacket, tan with a corduroy collar, and he stopped at the door to hold it for an old man with a cane.

"Morning, everyone," he said.

Three people greeted him by name.

He crossed to the register and set a coffee in front of Greer, and then, after a short pause, a second one beside the sweeper's broom, where I was standing.

"Oat milk," he said to me. "I remembered."

"Thanks."

I took it with my left hand.

It was exactly how I drank it.

That was the thing about Darren that I had never been able to put down.

He remembered everything and he forgot nothing, and he was kind with all of it.

"Greer," he said, softly. "Could I borrow you? Somewhere quieter."
