Chapter 12: Fabio Knows

Pippa was sitting up in bed with the blanket to her chin and her eyes on the white rose in Fabio's hand.

She had gone very still.

"Noelle," she said. "He says Domenico's dying."

"Don't," I said to Fabio.

"I'm only telling her what she's owed."

He turned the stem between his fingers and smiled up at me with that warm, easy face.

"A girl has a right to know what she's been given."

"Get out."

"I'm a trustee of this foundation. I'm allowed to visit a patient."

"You're not allowed to visit her with that rose."

He laughed.

"Domenico has the family heart," he said, to Pippa. "The same thing you have, the same thing his mother had."

My sister's face did not move.

"Your sister is sleeping with a dying man," said Fabio gently.

"And he's given you his life to keep her. I think that's romantic. I do."

"But I think you should know exactly what you're being handed."

"How did you get his file?" I said.

"The clinic is mine to audit. I audited."

"You went through his chart."

"I went through everyone's chart." He shrugged. "That's how I found out Pippa's place in the waiting line was sold in August. Isn't that interesting?"

I went cold.

"Sold," said Pippa.

"A man from Port Richmond paid for his niece to jump the line, and you slid down it."

Fabio's smile didn't flicker.

"I'd never do such a thing, of course. I'd only mention it."
