Chapter 13: The Table, Early
Nonna Lina's driver was already idling at the hospital curb when I came out.
"She said you'd tell her you'd stay put," he said, opening the back door. "She said to tell you she knows you."
Domenico's coat lay folded on the back seat, still smelling of cedar.
I took it with me when I got out on Passyunk Avenue.
A man stood in front of the restaurant's back door, one of the two who had sat in the sedan outside Delancey Street.
He had a neck and he put his hand flat against my chest.
"Members only," he said.
"I'm bringing him his coat."
"Then take your hand off me and explain it to Nonna Lina yourself," I said. "She's about four minutes behind me."
He took it away.
I opened the door.
Eleven old men sat at the long table under the yellow lamps, and in front of each of them lay a stapled sheaf of paper.
Fabio stood at the far end with his thumbs hooked in his vest, the picture of a man grieving.
At the foot of the table, in his charcoal suit and no coat, Domenico stood with both hands at his sides.
