Chapter 18: Intensive Care
They shocked him twice on the lobby floor and once more in the elevator.
By nine that morning Domenico lay in the cardiac unit, the color of old paper.
He had a tube in his arm and a monitor over his head.
The cardiologist stood with me at the glass.
"His heart went into a rhythm it can't survive on its own," she said.
"We got him back. We'll put in a defibrillator tomorrow, if he's here tomorrow."
"And the dose?"
"The dose is the only thing that changes the weather."
"There isn't one."
"No," she said. "Not today."
I went in and sat beside the bed.
I took his hand, the left one, with the gold signet, and laid mine over it so Giulia's ring sat against his knuckle.
His fingers were warm and entirely limp.
I did not cry.
I counted the beeps on the monitor instead, and when I lost count I started again.
The door opened a little after ten.
Pippa came in dragging her IV pole, in a fresh robe, with her braid crooked.
"I'm sitting with him," she announced.
