Nobody in the bar heard it but the three of them.

Sinatra was still going on the jukebox.

Santino stood with Mandy's hand on his sleeve and didn't move.

Then he said, "Come with me."

He was looking at Mickey.

Mickey should have said no.

He threw his apron to the server with the nose ring and went.

The driver had the car at the curb before they reached the door.

Nobody spoke on Lake Shore Drive.

Santino sat with his gloved hands locked together between his knees.

At a red light on Ontario, he said, very low, "He thinks I did it."

"He's been asleep for nine days. He doesn't know what he thinks."

"He said it first. Before my name. Before 'where am I.'"

Mickey didn't have anything to say to that.

The eighth floor was lit up.

There were already men in the hallway.

Not Santino's men. Nunzio's.

And the capo with the cane, in a folding chair by the nurses' station, his hat on his knee.

The fat capo next to him, eating from a bag of pretzels Mickey recognized from the vending machine.

They stood up when the others came off the elevator.
