The barback held the glass out over the rail.

Kelli kept her hands behind her back.

"Pick it up," the capo with the cane said.

"No."

"It's a drink, Kel," Mickey said. "You carried a hundred trays for this family. What's one more?"

"I'm not carrying that."

"Why not? Nothing happens to it at the well."

She looked at him through the pass.

"Unless you know what happens to it in the corridor," Mickey said.

The whole room turned to look at the back door.

Nunzio laughed, too loud.

"She's scared of you people. Look at her. She posted that she's scared."

Mickey came out from behind the bar.

He stood in the doorway of the well, next to the barback.

"Tell them what you saw," he said. "The way you told me."

The kid put the glass down on the rail.

He looked out at forty-one faces in their party clothes and at the Don in his chair.

"She wrote the card herself," he said. "Then the ticket came up under her name. I made it. She took it."

"She went out the back. Not to the lounge."

"He's a kid," Nunzio said. "A kid who gets paid by the bartender."
