Mickey went back up the stairs two at a time.
Santino was sitting on the edge of the bed in his jeans, bare-chested, his hair every direction at once.
"Who was it?"
"Your father's driver."
Santino was on his feet before Mickey finished.
"Is he..."
"He's fine. He wants us at the table. Two o'clock." Mickey pulled the sweater off over his head and threw it at him. "Both of us. He said 'both' twice."
Santino caught the sweater and didn't put it on.
He looked at Mickey for a long moment.
"You don't have to come."
"Did I ask?"
"No."
"Then I'm coming," Mickey said. "I want to see what he does with you."
At ten to two, Santino's driver let them out on Taylor Street.
Santino stood on the sidewalk outside the social club and looked at the door.
He'd walked through it a thousand times.
He'd never walked through it with nothing.
No chair. No men. No keys of his own.
"You're doing the wrist thing," Mickey said.
"I don't have a wrist thing."
"You rub your left wrist with your thumb when you're scared."
