Chapter 31: Opening Night

At five to eight on New Year's Eve, there was a line down Halsted in the snow.

Mickey stood behind his grandfather's bar in a white shirt, a cream waistcoat and a black tie.

The crack ran through the middle of it, oiled and dark, right where his father had left it.

Mandy came behind the bar in a green dress, her ponytail up, a little white card in her hand.

She'd started on the cardiac unit at Northwestern the Monday after she graduated.

The card was her new nurse's badge, her photo grinning in the corner, HEFFERNAN in block letters.

"Hold still," she said.

She unclipped it and pinned it on his waistcoat, over his heart.

"Mand. That's your badge."

"For luck. You get it back at midnight. If you lose it, I'll kill you, and I know where all the arteries are."

Mickey looked down at it.

Their name, on a hospital badge.

Mom would have cried.

Dad would have bought the whole bar a round he couldn't pay for.

"Okay," he said. "Hit the lights."

Mandy flipped the switch by the register.

Out in the window, the neon shamrock buzzed, flickered twice, and came on green for the first time in three years.
