Chapter 4: The Elevator

Kelli didn't look at either of them.

She went on wrapping glasses like the man in her kitchen was the plumber.

Nunzio leaned on the island and chewed another grape.

"February," he said, as if Mickey had asked.

"Your Valentine's party. You were pouring champagne for my aunt's friends, and she was in the coat room with me."

"Nunzio," Kelli said.

"What? He should know. It's good for a man to know things."

He smiled at Mickey.

"You're good at knowing things, right? Every drink, every guest."

"I know you had two Campari sodas last night."

"I did. Bitter. Like me."

Nunzio laughed, big, the same laugh that used to come with a hundred-dollar tip.

"So what are you doing here, bartender? Come to get your girl back?"

"I came for my money."

"Your money's gone." He pulled the towel off his neck. "Like your girl."

He came around the island.

He was a head shorter than Santino and twice as wide.

He stopped close enough that Mickey could smell the coconut.

"How's your little sister?"

Mickey's whole body went cold.

"Mandy, right? Nursing school. UIC."

Nunzio said it softly, kindly.

"She does her rotation on the cardiac floor at Northwestern. My uncle's floor. Small world."

"Stay away from her."

"Oh, I'd never touch her."

He patted Mickey's cheek, twice, light.

"But it's a big hospital. People fall down stairs. Needles get mixed up."

"Nurses make mistakes, and the families sue, and those girls never work again."

Mickey took the man's wrist off his face.

He didn't let go of it.

"If you go near my sister," he said, "I will find out every drink you've had since you were twenty-one."

"And I'll find the one that puts you in the ground."

Something flickered in Nunzio's eyes.

Then he laughed again.
