The diner on Eighty-sixth Street stayed open all night, and the woman I wanted worked the Thursday double.
In my first life Piero had told me about her once, in bed, laughing, as if she were a story about a car.
I had never forgotten the name of the club where she worked, or the street of this diner, which he had mentioned in passing.
Old Barbieri's money had bought her silence from everyone but the man who enjoyed telling it.
Adamo parked the truck across the street and killed the engine.
"I'll be here," he said.
"You'll be here."
"I won't come in."
"I know."
He didn't say anything else, and I loved him for it.
I went in alone.
It was four in the afternoon, between the lunch crowd and the dinner one.
She was behind the counter in a blue uniform, wiping a coffee machine that was already clean.
She was about twenty-six, with a long dark braid and a tired mouth, and she saw me before I reached the stool.
