Chapter 19: The Father's Sentence
The gun was steady in Piero's hand, and the barrel pointed at my brother's chest.
I had one second, and I had spent eight years learning exactly how long a second was in that man's house.
I walked forward.
I did not run, and I did not shout.
I walked up the three steps onto the low platform, between the gun and Enrico, until the muzzle touched my jacket over my breastbone.
"Fabi!" Enrico said behind me.
"Stay where you are."
Piero's eyes widened for the first time that night.
"Move."
"You said you'd teach me later, where nobody can see," I said, loud enough for the back of the room.
"Look around, Piero. Everybody can see."
"Shoot me, then. In front of forty men."
His finger tightened on the trigger, and a muscle jumped under his eye, the same one as the night of the ring.
"Put it down, Piero."
The voice came from the back, thin and rasping and absolutely calm.
