Chapter 17: Kitchen Light
The marble counter was cold under my bare thighs, and his mouth was already on me.
It was three in the morning, and the only light in Rosa's kitchen came from the open refrigerator.
It lay across the tile in a pale yellow wedge.
I had my sleep shirt rucked up around my waist, my heels hooked over his shoulders, and one fist pressed against my own mouth.
Rosa's bedroom was directly over our heads.
"Quiet," he whispered against my clit.
"I'm trying."
"Try harder."
He licked me, a slow wet stroke from the bottom to the top, and my whole body bowed against the cabinet behind me.
I had come down for a glass of milk.
I had stood at the open refrigerator in the dark.
He had come in behind me, silent in bare feet, and I had stopped wanting any reason to say no.
"Janelle," he had said, at my ear. "Get up on the counter."
"Make me stay quiet."
That was all it took.
Now I sat on the counter among the fruit bowl and the jar of wooden spoons.
The Don of Newark knelt on his sister's kitchen floor with his hands spread on my thighs.
He took his time.
He circled my clit with the tip of his tongue until my toes curled.
He flattened it and licked in broad lazy sweeps, and then he sucked, gently, and I bit my knuckle.
My heart hammered.
Overhead a floorboard creaked.
We both froze.
He lifted his head, his mouth shining in the thin light, and looked at the ceiling.
I looked at him.
The creaking stopped.
A toilet flushed upstairs, and a door shut.
His eyes came back to mine, black and amused and terrible.
"Don't you dare stop," I breathed.
