Chapter 18: The Revolver
The two cars in the rehab lot pulled out the moment Benny's headlights swept over them.
They didn't speed.
They didn't hide their plates.
They just drove away slowly.
My mother slept through all of it, in a room that smelled of lavender soap, with her pink cardigan folded on the chair.
Luciano posted two men in the corridor and two in the lot, and he did not say a word to me on the drive home.
At nine the next morning he walked into the study, where I was drinking coffee, and set my father's revolver on the desk.
Benny stood behind him with a small brown paper bag.
The gun lay between us, black and plain on the green blotter.
"I took it out from under the bed," Luciano said. "It's yours."
I looked at it.
I looked at the six brass cartridges he had left on the blotter beside it, rolling a little in the light.
"You're giving it back," I said.
"I'm giving you the choice. I should have given it to you in Rosso's."
"Loaded?"
"That's up to you."
I picked up the revolver.
It was heavy, warm from the lamp, and the grip fit my palm like it always had.
Benny cleared his throat.
"Miss Janelle, I could show you how to hold it. It's no trouble."
"Thanks, Benny. I know how to hold it."
I opened the cylinder, thumbed in a cartridge, and then another.
I loaded all six, one at a time, with my eyes on Luciano's face.
I closed the cylinder with a click.
He didn't blink.
"Where's your range?" I said.
The range was a concrete cellar under Rosso's kitchen, with a steel door and a row of sandbags.
