Chapter 19: The Spare Room
My brother gave up the bottom bunk with the solemnity of a king handing over a kingdom.
"It's got a light," he told Julian, pointing to a clip lamp on the rail.
"And a shelf. Don't touch the shelf. The shelf is mine."
"I won't touch the shelf."
"And the top is mine. I'll be up there. If you hear a noise, it's me, and I'm not asleep."
"Understood," Julian said, with his duffel bag at his feet.
He looked at the bunk, which was too short for him by about a foot.
Then he looked at the poster of a dragon on the wall.
"I've slept on worse," he said.
"Where?"
"On a narrow bed in an empty house with a hot plate."
"That's not worse," my brother said. "That's just lonely."
Nobody said anything, and my brother, who had no idea what he had done, went off to find his socks.
Dinner was meatloaf, and my mother put the first slice on Julian's plate without asking.
He ate slowly, this time.
He asked for the recipe, and my mother laughed so hard she had to put down her fork.
