Chapter 23: The Work Crew

My brother stood at the stove in an apron two sizes too big.

He flipped pancakes with the air of a man defusing a bomb.

A sheet of lined paper was taped to the refrigerator, with a title in marker.

OPERATION LAP.

"Sit," he said. "Both of you. It's a plan."

Julian and I sat at the table, still holding hands under it, which my mother noticed and decided to ignore.

"Item one," my brother said, pointing with the spatula. "Julian used to swim. Hattie said so. He stopped because nobody was timing him."

"I did not say that to you," I said.

"You said it to Mom, and I was behind the door."

Julian looked at me.

"Item two. Hattie has a watch. It is slow but it works."

"Item three, there is a pool at the school, and Hattie is president, so she can open it."

"I'm not sure the president can..." I said.

"Item four," said my brother, over me. "I come, and I watch."

"And if Julian is good, he teaches me to do a flip turn."

"And if I'm bad?"

"Then you teach me anyway. Pancakes."

He put a stack in front of Julian with a flourish.
