Chapter 7: Sunday Supper

"It's not stolen," I said into the flashlight. "These are my grandmother's flowers."

Desiree laughed.

"Your grandmother's dead, sweetie. Everything in this clearing belongs to the Yardley pack."

"She planted every one of them."

"And I'm sure she'd be so proud of you, sneaking around in the dark with a Brannigan." She tapped her screen. "Kyler's going to love this. So is my father."

Roark stepped up beside me.

"Take your video to the Council," he said. "I'll be there."

"Oh, you will be."

She lowered the light and walked off toward the packhouse, humming.

We went back across the river with the bag between us and didn't say a word until we were back on Brannigan land.

"She's going to have that on her father's desk by breakfast," Roark said.

"Then I need to beat her to it."

"How?"

"Gran never planted anything that wasn't hers," I said.

At five in the morning I was sitting on the floor of my back room with Gran's cigar box open in my lap.

At the bottom, folded in thirds, was a deed.

A strip of land along the east edge of the Awakening clearing, bordered in stone, granted by the Yardley elders to my grandmother in 1962.

Under it was a copy of her will.

The strip, the shop and everything in it went to me.

Sunday supper at the Yardley packhouse was at five, every week, my whole life.

Long tables in the great room. The elders at the head. Sixty wolves passing roast chicken and gossip.

I'd sat at Kyler's right hand for four years.

This Sunday I walked in through the front door with a canvas bag in one hand and a manila envelope in the other.

Krista was behind me.

"I'm human," she'd said in the truck. "They can't do anything to me without the whole town hearing about it. I'm basically a bodyguard."
