Chapter 6: Gran

"Who were you talking to?" I said.

Tobin turned from the window with his phone still in his hand.

The first light was coming up gray behind him, and he was in his boxer briefs.

"My grandmother," he said.

"At three in the morning."

"She doesn't sleep. She watched your video."

I sat up and pulled the sheet to my chin. "What video?"

He held up the phone.

On the screen I was standing on a rotating display in a wedding dress, pointing at the camera.

Under it was a number: 412,000 views.

"Oh my God," I said.

"My grandmother has shared it all morning."

"What did she say?"

"She wanted to drive to Sandpiper Lane and sit on your father's porch with a shotgun." His mouth twitched. "I told her not yet. Let you have the house first."

The tension I'd carried since 3:02 finally broke.

"That's all it was?"

"That's all it was."

I looked at his face for a lie, and I could not find one.

I found something else, a flicker, a thing he was choosing not to say.

"Tobin," I said. "What do you do for a living?"

"I build things."

"What things?"

"Buildings, mostly." He scratched his jaw. "I've done all right."

"That's a lot of dodging for a man who told me he was twelve minutes in."

"I'll tell you more." He sat on the edge of the bed. "Not today. I want one day where you married me and not what I do."

I thought about that.

I thought about Colt, who had always talked about what he did.
