Chapter 13: The Accusation

Shayla didn't run.

She smiled at me through the glass.

Then she strolled away across the side yard.

Granger had already pulled the quilt over his legs.

"She saw," I said.

"She saw a knee." His jaw was tight. "That's plenty."

"What will she do with it?"

"Something loud."

It took her four hours.

At noon the Gamma came down the road and stood at the bottom of the ramp with his cap in his hands again.

"The Alpha wants you both in the dining hall," he said. "Lunch. Everyone's there."

"Rae." He looked miserable. "It's about you."

I turned to Granger. "Stay here. I'll handle it."

"No."

"You hate that room."

"I'm still coming." He was already reaching for his jacket. "You don't walk into that alone."

So I pushed him up the gravel road for the second time that week.

The dining hall went quiet the second we came through the door.

Two hundred people stopped chewing.

Shayla stood beside the Run board with her arms folded, her pendant catching the light.

Jagger sat at the Alpha's table with a white bandage wrapped around his right wrist.

"There she is," Shayla said. "Our nurse."

"What do you want, Shayla?"

"I want the pack to know what you've been doing to the heir."

She turned to the room and raised her voice.

"Two weeks ago Granger could sit at a table and hold a conversation. Now he barely leaves that cabin. Our healer says the poison in his legs is climbing. And who sleeps next to him every night?"

People looked at me.

"Show them, baby," Shayla said.

Jagger stood up.

He unwound the bandage slowly.

The burn on his wrist was still angry red, blistered white at the edges.

The room murmured.

"Wolfsbane," Jagger said. "She put it on me on the trail. She carries it everywhere. So ask her what she's been rubbing into my brother's legs."
