Chapter 19: The Examination

"Then teach me in the daylight," I said. "Every hold. Every crack. Until I can do it blind."

"That's the idea, girl."

Wanda went to sleep with her fist still around my wrist.

For five days she taught me the Ladder from a hay bale.

She drew the chimney on the back of a feed sack in charcoal, every hold, every ledge, the Keyhole and the seep above it.

I climbed it every afternoon with the twins on the rope.

On the fifth day I climbed it with a bandanna over my eyes.

Thirty-eight minutes.

The fast wolf still only needed eleven.

On the sixth evening, the Gamma knocked on the cabin door.

The coven healer stood behind him in her long gray coat with a black leather bag.

"The Alpha's orders," the Gamma said. He was studying the porch boards. "There's talk the heir is getting worse. The healer's to examine him before the Run."

"Tonight?" I said.

"Now."

The healer stepped past him into my kitchen without being asked.

She smelled of smoke and sage. Exactly like the blade in my boot.

"Where is he?"

Granger rolled out of the bedroom in a gray T-shirt and sweatpants.

His eyes went to the healer, then to me.

"Granger," the healer said, very pleasant. "Bedroom, please. I'll need your legs bare."

His left leg was clean from hip to ankle.

One look and she'd know everything.

She was already walking into the bedroom. She sat down on the edge of our bed, set her bag on the quilt and started snapping on gloves.

I looked at Granger.

He looked at me.

"No," I said.

The healer looked up. "Excuse me?"

"No examination. It's bonding week."

The Gamma made a small noise in the doorway.

"Bonding week," the healer repeated.

"It's an old custom. Look it up in the founders' book. Nobody lays hands on a newly bonded wolf but his mate." I folded my arms. "Not a healer. Not an Alpha. Nobody."

"Your bonding was a month ago."

"We got off to a slow start."

The healer turned to Granger. "Is this true?"

Granger nodded gravely. "She's very strict about it."

"I have orders."

"So do I," I said.

I walked over to his chair.

Then I climbed into his lap, facing him, one knee on either side of his hips.
