Chapter 5: The Board

We spent the morning being scientists.

I pulled on a latex glove and laid my left hand on his right calf.

My bare right hand went on his left calf.

We set the kitchen timer for an hour.

"This is the most romantic thing I've ever done," Granger said.

"Hush. You'll scare the data."

When the timer went off, I peeled back the glove.

Nothing. Black lines, same as before.

Under my bare hand, a faint clean patch had already started. Small, but there.

"Skin," I said. "It has to be skin."

He was looking at my hand, not his leg.

"Rae. Wolfsbane burns. Anyone who touches it gets blisters to the bone. How are you holding it?"

I'd never told anybody this.

"It doesn't hurt me," I said. "Never has. When I was fourteen I pulled a wolfsbane arrow out of a rogue with my bare hand because I didn't know any better. Nothing happened."

"Nothing."

"My mother knew. She told me never to tell a wolf." I shrugged. "I've handled the infirmary's whole locked cabinet barehanded for three years. I just wear gloves when people are watching."

He was quiet for a second.

"So the one person in this pack who can touch the poison," he said, "married the one person who's full of it."

"I didn't plan it."

"I know. That's what scares me."

That night we had a new problem.

"An hour gets a patch the size of a quarter," I said. "A whole night gets a handprint. Your legs are a lot of real estate."

"So we're doing nights."

"We're doing nights."

He looked at the couch. Then at the bed. Then at me.

"That couch is eight inches too short for you," he said.
