Chapter 23: The Wall

Zhenyuan woke to cold on the furs where his husband should have been.

He was out of the tent with his coat half on before he knew he had moved.

The morning was blue and gold, and the snow had stopped.

Wenxuan stood at the foot of the long barracks wall with a chisel in his hand, and he did not look up.

Zhenyuan stopped three paces away.

He had known the wall was there all along.

He had not known how to say so.

"They did this," Wenxuan said, to the stone. "A hundred men. With knives."

"Two hundred. It took the last three winters." His voice would not behave.

"I did not ask them to. They found the book in the trench, and the corporal's boy could cut letters, and it spread."

"You left room at the bottom," said Wenxuan.

"I could not remember the last line."

"You could not remember?" Wenxuan turned his head. His eyes were bright. "You said you knew it by heart."

"I know the line I know. I did not want to cut a wrong one into your wall."

Wenxuan looked at him for a long moment.

Then he lifted the chisel, set the edge against the stone, and began to cut.

He was slow at it.

He had never held a chisel in his life, and the first stroke skidded, and he swore, softly and with great elegance.
