Chapter 13: Twenty Questions
The trust's lawyer put us in separate rooms on the fifteenth floor on Tuesday morning.
My room had a table, two chairs and a glass of water I was afraid to touch.
The lawyer sat across from me with a legal pad and the face of a man who bills in six-minute blocks.
"We'll begin with the planned questions," he said. "The ones you two have prepared for."
"We didn't prepare."
"Where did you first meet your husband?"
"The Cathedral of Learning," I said. "In May. I spilled a latte on him."
"What color was the latte?"
I opened my mouth.
I had told that lie four times, to a dining room, and I had never once given the latte a color.
"Brown," I said.
He wrote that down with great care.
"Mr. Shaw says it was an iced tea."
"He's wrong."
"Mr. Shaw was in Rotterdam in May, according to his passport."
"We said that," I said. "We said he lives in Rotterdam."
"Mm."
He turned a page.
"Next. How does your husband take his coffee?"
I did not have to think.
"Black. He lets it go cold while he reads his phone, and then he drinks it anyway and makes a face."
"What does he do when he's angry?"
"He goes very quiet, and then he walks out of the room and slams a door upstairs."
"And when he's afraid?"
"He gets polite."
The pen stopped.
"Polite," said the lawyer.
"He says thank you to people who haven't done anything."
The lawyer looked at me for the first time with something other than billing in his eyes.
"What do you do when you're afraid?"
"I count," I said. "Stairs, lunches, ceiling tiles. Right now there are forty-two on the left."
