Chapter 16: Termination
I read every page of the PDF standing at the printer on fourteen, and then I took the elevator to fifteen.
Truman's office had glass walls and a view of the Allegheny, and his assistant half rose from her desk when she saw my face.
"He's alone," she said.
He was standing at the window with his back to the room.
There was no box on the desk and no coat on the chair, only a legal folder and a pen laid straight beside it.
"You came," he said, without turning.
"I read your paper."
I put the printout on his desk, and my hand shook, and I let it.
"Page four," I said. "Read it to me."
He turned around.
He looked as if he hadn't slept since the hearing, and the stubble on his jaw had gone past a shadow.
"Effective today, the agreement of October sixteenth is dissolved by mutual release," he said. "A payment of four hundred thousand dollars is held in escrow in your name."
"Page six."
"A letter to the trust that you acted in good faith and knew nothing of the elevator."
"Page nine."
He stopped.
"Say it."
