Chapter 12: The Judge Who Knew Her Mother
The Seven's hall stood on a hill outside the city, a gray stone building with a bell nobody had rung in a hundred years.
Declan walked me to the door of the Judge's chamber and stopped.
"I'm not allowed in," he said. "It's his rule. An Apex doesn't sit in on a Reading, or what comes before it."
"I know."
"Do you want me to wait here?"
"Yes."
He kissed my temple, once, quickly.
I felt it all the way to the Judge's desk.
The chamber was a round room lined with books, with one tall window and a fire burning in the hearth.
The old Judge sat behind a plain oak desk.
He had silver hair and a thin face, and he looked at me for a long time before he spoke.
"Sit, Ms. Bourchier."
I sat.
"I have been Judge of the Seven for forty years. I have not sat in this chair and been afraid more than twice." His voice was dry and gentle. "This is the third."
"Afraid of what?"
"Of being right." He folded his hands. "Your father was Beta of the Hollis pack."
"Yes."
"Your mother was not a Hollis."
I didn't say anything.
"Your mother was born a Hallowell. She was the youngest daughter of the last Alpha of that line." He said it quietly, watching my face. "I knew her. I sat beside her at her first Gathering, when she was fourteen years old and so frightened of her own father that she asked me to hold her hand."
The fire popped in the hearth.
"I didn't know that," I said.
"No. I don't think she told your father either, until after you were born."
