Chapter 17: The Tag
"Shut him up," Sable said.
One of the crew put a boot on the handler's chest. He went on laughing anyway, quieter.
Sable grabbed the tracker screen out of my hands.
She shook it. She hit the side of it with her palm.
The dot sat in the canal and didn't move.
"It's broken," she said. "It's my rig, it's broken, the steam's messing with it."
"It's not broken."
"Ember."
"It's not broken," I said. "It's in the water. That's all it says. The tag's in the water."
I got in the truck.
"What are you doing?"
"Going to get him."
"It's venting! You said yourself, everything!"
"It vented through the tower. Listen. The siren's stopped."
It had. The whoop had cut off in the middle.
"The canal side's upwind," I said. "The cloud's going east."
The old man stood at my window with Gran's rifle in his hands.
"You promised him," he said. "Not one step."
"I know."
"He'll be angry."
"Good. I want him angry. I want him alive enough to be angry."
