Chapter 23: His Mother's Head

Brand didn't move from in front of me.

"A place," he said. "Under the dome you just heard your mother call a kennel."

Perrin didn't look at him. He looked at me.

"I'm not asking for free," he said. "I can pay."

"With what?"

He glanced at the chamber doors again and lowered his voice.

"Her."

The corridor was very quiet.

"The Registry archive is in the Tower basement," he said. "Every clock she ever typed. Every hunt order. The original crack report, not a copy."

"I have the keys. I can bring you all of it."

"In exchange for a berth," I said.

"For me." He swallowed. "Two seats. One for me, one for whoever I bring. And nobody touches me when I'm through your gate."

I looked at him for a long moment.

He'd sent me his best wishes in pale blue ink the night my children were born.

Now he was offering me his mother.

"No," I said.

He blinked. "You haven't heard the..."

"I heard it. No."

"Ember, I'm handing you the woman who killed your parents."

"You're selling her. To save your own seat."
