Chapter 19: The Transport
I went down the slope.
Rook was beside me before I reached the first scree.
Imogen ran behind us, red and gasping, and I heard her shifting back, then the whine of a quad engine.
I did not look.
The truck was a quarter mile ahead, grinding along the quarry road in low gear.
It had no markings on the cab and a steel box on the bed with a rusted door.
Two men sat on the roof of the box with rifles across their knees.
They wore the same black as Delphine's hunters.
"Mother," I thought, with my whole wolf.
The road curved along the lip of the quarry.
On one side rose a wall of raw rock, and on the other the ground fell away into black water.
If I got ahead of the truck, I could jump it at the bend.
If I missed, I would go off the edge.
I put my head down and ran.
My claws tore the gravel.
The truck's tail lights came up, red and swollen, and the exhaust choked my nose.
A rifle cracked from the roof, and the dart hissed past my ear.
