Chapter 23: Wolves Come Home

We ran for the kitchen door, all of us, with the howl following us down the stair.

It rose through sixty steps of stone and filled the cellar corridor.

Rook took the steps three at a time.

My mother followed, white-haired and fast, with Imogen and the guards behind her.

The round room was ringing.

Every vessel was lit from inside, and every wolf in them stood at the glass with its head thrown back.

The Well had taken its card, and the locks had gone slack.

I laid my palm on the glass in front of the cream-colored wolf.

It had been the size of a pup in my first look.

Now it stood as tall as my hip, and its eyes were Tilly's.

"I've got you," I said. "Go home."

I pulled the brass handle.

The vessel cracked down the middle with a sound like ice on a lake.

Silver light poured out of it and took the shape of a wolf, and it ran.

It went up the stair, and I heard it laugh on the way.

Wolves are not supposed to laugh.

This one did.

"All of them," Rook said, hoarse.

He ran down the rows with his good arm swinging and his bleeding side forgotten, wrenching handles.

Glass broke, and light spilled.

Imogen worked the other side, her hands shaking, crying and not stopping.
