Chapter 16: The Offer
"Don't hang up," said Fiammetta's voice, small and breathless. "Please, Gemma. I'm alone."
Gemma put the phone on speaker so Raffaele could hear.
"Where are you?"
"Saint Leonard's, on Hanover Street, in the side chapel. Come by yourself, and I'll tell you where my mother is."
"Why would you sell your own mother?"
"Because she sold me first." Fiammetta's voice cracked. "She meant to leave me with the Orsatti and run to Palermo with the money. I heard her on the phone. I want out, Gemma."
"What do you want for it?"
"The half of the map your husband took off the bed. I'll hand you Rosanna, and you hand me the map, and I take it to the Orsatti and say I made them a fair trade."
"And then?"
"Then I'm done with all of it. I swear it on your mother."
The line went dead.
Raffaele took the phone out of Gemma's hand and looked at it.
"No," he said.
"She said alone."
"She's lying."
"Probably," said Gemma. "She's also the only person who knows where Rosanna is."
"You are not walking into a church by yourself."
"I'm a wife in a very public contract. Nobody shoots a Sandrelli wife at a church door in daylight."
"Orsatti shoot anyone anywhere."
She looked at him evenly.
"I'll wear your tracker. I'll leave the door open. You wait across the street with your men, and if I lift my left hand to my hair, you come in."
His jaw worked.
"Say no again," Gemma said. "I'd like to hear you try to keep me in a car."
He was silent for a long moment.
Then he took a coat button out of his pocket, black, smooth, with a thread of wire in the back, and sewed it on her sleeve himself with a pocket knife and two stitches.
