Chapter 11: The Gala
The gown was green.
It belonged to the woman who ran Alastair's fuel stop in Wheeling.
She drove it up to the river house in a dry cleaning bag and stood me in front of a mirror and pinned the waist.
"You walk like a trucker," she said.
"I am a trucker."
"Not on Friday you're not. Shorter steps. Don't swing your arms."
"What do I do with them?"
"Hold onto the rich boy."
Alastair was in the doorway in a black tux, pulling at the collar.
He looked at me in the gown and stopped pulling.
He didn't say anything for long enough that the woman from Wheeling laughed at him and left.
"Well?" I said.
"It's fine."
"Fine."
"It's very fine. It's a problem." He came in and fixed the strap on my shoulder that didn't need fixing. "I'm going to have to watch you walk in on Kesterson's arm."
"Augustus is my brother."
"I know that. My stomach doesn't."
"Your stomach can wait in the car."
"My stomach has an invitation. The Shardlows have been on that list since before I could walk. They'd be suspicious if I didn't show."
"So you're coming to keep me safe."
"I'm coming to stand next to the shrimp and glare at anyone who touches your back."
Clem drove us there in the Peterbilt, because it was the one thing nobody would look at twice on a service road.
He parked behind the catering trucks a quarter mile down the shore with the engine running.
"I'll be right here," he said. "If you're not back by ten, I'm coming in."
"You can't come in. You're in a flannel."
"Then they'll learn something about fashion."
The Kesterson house was even bigger than I remembered.
Every window was lit, the same as that night. The stone drive was full of black cars.
