Chapter 16: Rowena Comes
"No," Augustus said.
"Then I've got nothing to say."
"She's not a prize you get for talking."
"Everybody up here was a prize, son. Ask your daddy."
I turned and walked out of the cabin before I did something to a man in a wheelchair.
Augustus caught up with me at the truck.
"I won't ask her," he said. "I won't put her in a room with him."
"It's not your choice."
"It's not yours either."
"No," I said. "It's hers. Call her and tell her what's up here. All of it. Then let her choose."
He looked at me a long time.
Then he took out the cheap phone Alastair had bought him and walked down the skid trail to where it got one bar.
He came back twenty minutes later, gray.
"She's coming tomorrow."
On Wednesday my mother told her husband she was going to the Foundation office in Towson.
She drove herself, for the first time in eighteen years, and left her phone in the car in the Foundation garage.
Augustus met her at the truck stop at Keysers Ridge.
