Chapter 17: Sunday
On Thursday my mother walked into the state police barracks outside Morgantown and asked for the captain by name.
She talked for three hours in front of a camera.
The manifests. The Thursday she threatened him. The Saturday in the parking lot.
The eight years. The rescue. The cage.
When she came out, the captain walked her to her car himself. Then he came back inside and found me in the hall.
"I can roll now," he said.
"Sunday."
"Sunday. My troopers, not the county's. Nobody down there hears a word until it's done."
"They'll be at the mill shed by noon."
"Then we'll be up that hollow by dawn."
We weren't, quite.
At five in the morning on Sunday, the logging road was full of trucks with their lights off.
Four Shardlow pickups with six men apiece.
Two white vans with blankets and water and a medic Alastair paid in cash.
My Peterbilt, bobtail, in front, because I knew where every rut was in the dark.
The captain's troopers waited below at the turnoff from 219, out of sight in the trees.
